Watch features the original black tachymeter bezel, tritium dial, and tritium hands. The dial includes a standard time display along with a chronograph, month, date, day of the week, and moon phase. The watch is powered by the Martel cal. 281 manual-wound complicated movement. It comes with the original Universal steel bracelet. The case back clearly displays the reference and serial number. Case size is 36mm

The first 1960s Universal Geneve Tri-Compax model was the panda-dial ref. 881101/01, known among collectors as the “Eric Clapton” (musician Eric Clapton wore this model). Its reverse-color variant earned the nickname “Evil Eric Clapton.” These models were produced in 1964-65. Based on known serial numbers, it is estimated that a maximum of 1,000 units were made per version.

The Tri-Compax Exotic models were introduced in 1968. There were two distinct Exotic variants: the “Exotic Slate” (this blue-gray model on display) and the “Exotic Teal,” which featured a fully teal-blue dial. The total production for each dial version is estimated at 250-300 units. Currently, it is believed that fewer than 25 “Exotic Slate” models remain worldwide, making this an exceptionally rare piece.

The Universal Watch company was founded in 1894 by Swiss Ulysse Georges Perret and Numa-Emile Descombes. In 1919, the watchmaker relocated from Le Locle to Geneva, and in the 1960s, Universal Watch changed its name to Universal Geneve. Universal gained recognition as a manufacturer of high-quality chronographs. Particularly in the 1940s and 1950s, the company produced a wide variety of chronographs in both gold and steel cases. However, its most famous models were introduced in the 1960s, including the advanced Compax, Uni-Compax, and Tri-Compax lines. These watches were marketed in limited quantities and were highly valued compared to similar models from other manufacturers. Despite their quality, they did not achieve the desired commercial success, and production numbers remained low. In the 1970s, the oil crisis and the rise of Japanese quartz watches posed significant challenges to the Swiss watch industry, and like many other manufacturers, Universal Geneve struggled to compete. In the 1980s, the brand was sold to a Hong Kong-based investment firm. While Universal Geneve remains an active watch brand today, collectors overwhelmingly prize its mid-1960s production. These 1960s models are distinguished by bold design, high-quality construction, and above all, rarity.

Kellotaulussa on normaalin aikanäytön lisäksi kronografi, kuukausi, kuukaudenpäivä, viikonpäivä ja kuunkierto. Kellossa on Martelin valmistama cal.281 manuaalivetoinen komplikaatio koneisto. Alkuperäinen Universal teräsranneke. Takapohjassa on selvästi näkyvissä ref. ja sarjanumero. Ei laatikkoa/papereita. Kuoren koko on 36mm.

Ensimmäinen 1960-luvun Universal Geneve Tri-Compax malli oli Panda tauluinen ref.881101/01, jota kutsuaan keräilijöiden keskuudessa nimellä “Eric Clapton” (muusikko Eric Clapton käytti kysestä mallia). Sen sisarmalli käänteisellä tauluvärityksellä sai kutsumanimen “Evil Eric Clapton”. Nämä mallit olivat tuotannossa vuosina 1964-65. Ensimmäisiä malleja arvellaan tunnettujen sarjanumeroiden perusteella valmistetun maksimissaan 1000kpl versiota kohden.

Tri-Compax Exotic mallit esiteltiin vuonna 1968. Exotic malleja oli myös kaksi erilaista. “Exotic Slate” eli tämä meillä esillä oleva sini-harmaa malli sekä “Exotic Teal” jossa kellotaulu oli kokonaan sinivihreä. Kokonaistuotantomäärän arvellaan olleen 250-300 kpl/tauluversio. Tällä hetkellä näitä ”Exotic Slate” malleja arvellaan olevan jäljellä alle 25kpl koko maailmassa, eli kyseessä on poikkeuksellisen harvinainen yksilö.

Universal Geneve

Universal Watch yrityksen perustivat sveitsiläiset Ulysse Georges Perret ja Numa-Emile Descombes vuonna 1894. Kellovalmistaja muutti 1919 Le Loclesta Geneveen jossa 1960-luvulla Universal Watch vaihtoi nimensä muotoon Universal Geneve. Universal tuli tunnetuksi laadukkaiden kronografien valmistajana. Erityisesti 1940-50-luvulla he valmistivat paljon erilaisia kronografeja sekä kulta että teräskuoriin. Kaikkein tunnetuimmat mallit UG valmisti kuitenkin 1960-luvulla. Tuolloin he toivat tuotantoon kehittyneimmät Compax, Uni-Compax, Tri-Compax mallit. Kelloja markkinoitiin kuitenkin melko vähän ja ne olivat arvokkaita, verrattuna vastaaviin malleihin muilta valmistajilta. Toivottua kaupallista menestystä ei saavutettu ja tuotantomäärät jäivät alhaisiksi.

1970-luvulla öljykriisi ja Japanilaiset kvartsikellot aiheuttivat suuria ongelmia Sveitsin kelloteollisuudelle ja UG ei monen muun valmistajan tavoin pärjännyt kilpailussa. 1980-luvulla Universal Geneve myytiin Hong Kongissa toimivalle investointifirmalle. Vaikka Universal Geneve on yhtä toiminnassa oleva kellomerkki, niin keräilijät arvostavat ylivoimaisesti eniten heidän 1960-luvun puolivälin tuotantoa. Näitä 1960-luvun malleja yhdistää voimakas muotoilu, korkealaatuinen rakenne ja ennenkaikkea harvinaisuus.
