A very rare Rolex Oyster Perpetual GMT-Master “Pussy Galore” pilot’s wristwatch from 1958.

The watch features a charmingly aged original radium dial and original radium hands. The ref. 6542 model has a GMT hand with a small arrow and a white seconds hand. The rare original blue-red “Pepsi” bezel is original. The steel case remains in good condition. The inner case back is stamped III/1958. The case size is 38 mm.

The Rolex cal. 1030-GMT movement was recently serviced by us in 1/2026. The movement performed well in tests.

The Rolex Oyster “riveted” ref. 7206/80 steel bracelet is in good condition and original. The clasp features the original large Rolex crown stamp, and the inside is stamped 4/57.

The watch box is a rare green model with a green inner tray. The bottom of the box has a sticker: Oy Kultakönni Ab.

The watch comes with a 12-month service warranty.

Rolex GMT-Master 6542 ”Pussy Galore” from 1958

ROLEX 6542 Rolex introduced the first GMT-Master ref. 6542 in 1954. The model was originally designed for Pan-Am airline pilots and allowed for the tracking of two time zones for the first time. The primary time was read directly from the hands, and the second time zone was tracked using the 24-hour GMT hand and the rotating GMT bezel. The bezel’s color scheme was inspired by Pan-Am’s colors. The watch was produced in both steel and gold cases. The ref. 6542 was in production from 1954 to 1959, after which it was replaced by the ref. 1675-GMT. IN POP CULTURE This watch earned its nickname from the 1964 James Bond film Goldfinger. In the movie, Pussy Galore, played by actress Honor Blackman, served as Goldfinger’s personal pilot and wore this exact watch model. The late Cuban president Fidel Castro also regularly wore the Rolex ref. 6542. RECALL OF THE 6542 MODEL Rolex used Radium-226 as the luminescent material for the dial and hands of the ref. 6542, allowing them to be read in the dark. The first bezels (inserts) also used radium-based luminescent paint on the inside of the Perspex plastic, where the numbers were engraved. However, the gamma radiation from radium caused issues with the paint, and around 1957, it was replaced with Strontium-90, a byproduct of the Calder Hall fusion reactor opened in England in 1956. Strontium-90 made the paint glow more brightly, and since strontium is only a beta emitter, it was considered safer than Radium-226. However, in 1959, it was discovered that strontium-90, due to its “calcium mimicry” property combined with beta radiation, was even more dangerous than gamma radiation. Strontium-90 is chemically similar to calcium, so if it comes into contact with the skin, the body treats it like calcium, potentially allowing it to enter the bones and especially the bone marrow. As a result, in 1959, the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission ordered Rolex to recall all GMT-Master ref. 6542 watches from their owners and remove the Strontium-90 paint from the bezel structure. Rolex launched an international advertising campaign urging customers to return their watches for inspection and, if necessary, repair. During the repair, the bezel paint was replaced with a Promethium or Tritium mixture, which posed no danger to the wearer. It appears that many of the Perspex bezels were directly replaced with the aluminum Pepsi insert from the ref. 1675, which contained no luminescent material at all. Strontium-90 paint was ultimately used in bezels for only about one year, from 1957 to 1958. According to the official minutes of the British Atomic Energy Authority (March 29, 1962), from the beginning of 1958, this material was only supplied for medical or research purposes. The bezel of this watch has been measured with a calibrated Geiger-Muller counter, and its radiation level is close to background radiation values. It is likely that the luminescent material has been replaced with tritium or possibly promethium. Under UV light, the zinc sulfide in the luminescent material still glows clearly. The radium luminescent material on the dial and hands is original. COLLECTOR’S WATCH Due to the fragility of the Perspex bezel structure and the aforementioned issues, very few ref. 6542 watches retain their original bezel. In this watch, the bezel is original, as are the dial and hands. This makes the watch a very rare collector’s item.

Hyvin harvinainen Rolex Oyster Perpetual GMT-Master ”Pussy Galore” lentäjän rannekello vuodelta 1958.

Kellossa on sympaattisesti ikääntynyt alkuperäinen radium kellotaulu ja alkuperäiset radium osoittimet. 6542 mallissa on GMT-osoitin on pienellä nuolella ja sekuntiosoitin on valkoinen. Harvinainen alkuperäinen sini-punainen ”Pepsi” bezel on alkuperäinen. Teräskuori on yhä hyvässä kunnossa. Takapohjan sisäpuolella on vuosileima III/1958. Kuoren koko on 38 mm.

Rolex cal.1030-GMT koneisto on juuri meillä huollettu 1/2026. Testeissä koneisto toimi hyvin.

Rolex Oyster ”riveted” ref. 7206/80 teräsranneke on hyväkuntoinen ja alkuperäinen. Lukossa on alkuperäinen suurikokoinen Rolex kruunuleima ja sisäpuolella vuosileima 4/57.

Kellolaatikko on harvinainen vihreä malli vihreällä sisälevyllä. Laatikon alapohjassa on tarra: Oy Kultakönni Ab.

ROLEX 6542

Rolex esitteli ensimmäisen GMT-Master 6542 mallin vuonna 1954. Malli oli suunniteltu alunperin Pan-Am lentoyhtiön lentäjien käyttöön ja mahdollisti ensimmäisen kerran kahden aikavyöhykkeen seurannan. Ensisijainen aika luettiin suoraan osoittimista ja toinen aika 24 tunnin GMT-osoittimen ja kierrettävän GMT-bezelin avulla. Bezelin väritys tuli Pan-Am -lentoyhtiön väreistä. Kelloa valmistettiin sekä teräskuorella että kultaisena. 6542 oli tuotannossa vuodesta 1954 vuoteeen 1959 asti, jolloin se korvautui 1675-GMT mallilla.

POPULAARIKULTTUURISSA

Tämä kello sai kutsumanimensä vuoden 1964 James Bond elokuvan: Goldfinger kautta. Elokuvassa Goldfingerin naispuolisena yksityislentäjänä toimi Pussy Galore, jota esitti näyttelijä Honor Blackman. Elokuvassa lentäjällä oli tunnistettavasti juuri tämä kellomalli kädessään.

Myös edesmennyt Kuuban presidentti Fidel Castro käytti Rolex 6542 mallia säännöllisesti.

6542 MALLIN TAKAISINVETO

Rolex käytti 6542 mallissa kellotaulun loistemassan aktivointiaineena Radium-226 alkuainetta, joka mahdollisti kellotaulun ja osoittimien lukemisen pimeässä. Myös ensimmäisissä lasisarjoissa (bezel) käytettiin radium-loistemassaa Perspex-muovin sisäpuolelle kaiverrettujen numeroiden maalissa. Radiumin gammasäteily aiheutti kuitenkin ongelmia maalin kanssa ja se korvattiin n. 1957 Strontium 90 alkuaineella, jota saatiin Englannissa 1956 avatun Calder Hall-fuusioreaktorin sivutuotteena.

Strontium 90 sai maalin loistamaan kirkkaammin ja koska strontium on ”vain” beetasäteilijä, sen ajateltiin olevan turvallisempi kuin Radium-226. Strontium 90 vaarallisuuteen herättiin vasta vuonna 1959 kun huomattiin sen ”kalsiumin matkija” (Calcium mimicry) ominaisuuden yhdessä beetasätelyn kanssa olevan jopa gammasäteilyä vaarallisempaa. Strontium 90 on kemialliselta ominaisuuksiltaan kalsiumin kaltainen, joten jos ainetta pääsee iholle, keho käsittelee sitä kalsiumin tavoin ja sitä voin kulkeutua luihin ja erityisesti luuytimeen.

Tästä johtuen Yhdysvaltojen Atomic Energy Commission määräsi 1959 Rolexin vetämään takaisin kaikki GMT-Master 6542 mallit pois kellojen omistajilta ja poistamaan Strontium 90 maalin bezelin kellon rakenteesta. Rolex käynnisti kansainvälisen mainoskampanjan, jossa kehoitettiin ostajia palauttamaan kellonsa mitattavaksi ja tarvittaessa korjattavaksi. Lasisarjan maali korvattiin korjauksen yhteydessä Promitium tai Tritium-seoksella, jotka eivät aiheuta vaaraa kellon käyttäjälle. Ilmeisesti suuri osa pleksi lasisarjoista korvattiin suoraan 1675 malleista tutulla alumiini Pepsi insertillä, jossa ei ole lainkaan loistemassaa.

Strontium 90 maali oli lopulta käytössä lasisarjoissa vain noin yhden vuoden ajan 1957-1958. Fissiomateriaaliin alkuperäinen toimittajan, BritannianThe Atomic Energy Authorityn virallisen pöytäkirjan (29. maaliskuuta 1962) mukaan vuoden 1958 alusta tätä materiaalia toimitettiin enää vain lääketieteelliseen tai tutkimustarkoitukseen.

Tämän kellon lasisarja on mitattu kalibroidulla Geiger-Muller-mittarilla ja sen säteilyarvo on lähellä taustasäteilyn arvoja. On oletettavaa, että loistemassa on vaihdettu tritiumiin tai mahdollisesti promitiumiin. UV-valossa loistemassan sinkkisulfidi loistaa yhä selvästi. Kellotaulun ja osoittimien radium-loistemassa on alkuperäinen.

KERÄILYHARVINAISUUS

GMT-Master 6542 mallin lasisarjan muovirakenteen murtumaherkkyydestä sekä edellämainituista ongelmista johtuen, hyvin harvassa 6542 mallissa on jäljellä alkuperäinen lasisarja. Tässä kellossa lasisarja on alkuperäinen, kuten myös kellotaulu ja osoittimet. Tämä tekee kellosta hyvin harvinaisen keräilyharvinaisuuden.
