Cartier History in watchmaking  Louis-François Cartier took over his master’s jewellery workshop in 1847. Over the years, his sons and grandsons inherited the family business and expanded the brand by opening shops in New York and London. King Edward VII of the United Kingdom granted Cartier a prestigious royal warrant in 1904, calling the brand “the jeweller of kings and the king of jewellers.” Such was the renown of Cartier, that royal warrants soon rolled in from all over the world (among which, Belgium, Egypt, Greece, Siam, Spain, Portugal, and Russia). While Cartier is known primarily for its jewellery, it also has a storied history in watchmaking. Cartier’s first foray in watchmaking came in 1888, offering exclusively ladies models. Cartier’s foray into wristwatches began in the early 20th century, a transformative era when pocket watches still reigned supreme. The brand’s first groundbreaking wristwatch, the Santos, debuted in 1904. Commissioned by the pioneering Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont, this model was designed for practicality in the skies. Its square case, exposed screws, and leather strap defied the conventions of the time, making it one of the first wristwatches explicitly created for men. The Santos not only solved a functional need but also set a new standard for wristwatch design, blending utility with sophistication. In 1917, Cartier unveiled the Tank, a model that would become synonymous with the brand’s identity. Inspired by the linear, geometric forms of Renault tanks during World War I, the Tank’s rectangular case and clean, architectural lines were a bold departure from the ornate, round pocket watches of the era. Its design was both revolutionary and timeless, embodying a perfect balance of form and function. The Tank quickly captured the imagination of the elite, becoming a symbol of modernity and refinement. It was embraced by style icons, artists, and royalty, cementing its place as a cultural icon. Building on the success of the Tank, Cartier introduced the Tank Chinoise in 1922. This model was a celebration of the brand’s fascination with global aesthetics, particularly the art and design of East Asia. The Tank Chinoise featured a rectangular case with slightly curved, stepped lugs, evoking the architectural motifs of Chinese temples. Its intricate design and delicate proportions made it a favorite among those who appreciated both artistry and precision. The Tank Chinoise was not just a timepiece but a statement of cultural appreciation and craftsmanship. Another notable model from this era was the Santos Ronde, a variation of the original Santos that embraced a rounder, more traditional case shape while retaining the exposed screws and robust design elements of its predecessor. Introduced in the late 1920s, the Santos Ronde offered a more classic aesthetic, appealing to those who preferred a subtle nod to tradition without sacrificing the innovative spirit of the Santos line. Its versatility and elegance made it a staple in Cartier’s collection, bridging the gap between the avant-garde and the timeless. Among Cartier’s early masterpieces, the Tank Normale stands out as a paragon of understated luxury. Launched in the 1920s, the Tank Normale was the purest expression of the Tank’s design philosophy. With its perfectly rectangular case, minimalist dial, and seamless integration of the strap into the lugs, the Tank Normale epitomized simplicity and elegance. It was a model that distilled the essence of the Tank into its most refined form, making it a favorite among connoisseurs who valued subtlety and sophistication. The Tank Normale’s enduring appeal lies in its ability to remain relevant across decades, a testament to Cartier’s mastery of design.

Cartier Santos Vendôme Ronde ref. 8191 noin 1990 luvulta.

Kuoren koko on 32 mm.

Tämän yksilön teräs-kulta ranneke on erittäin hyvässä kunnossa.

Kellon mukana tulee Cartierin punainen suojapussi, ei alkuperäistä laatikkoa/papereita.

Kellolla on 12 kk huoltotakuu.
